Integrating Sophisticated Domain-Independent Pedagogical Behaviors in an ITS Framework

چکیده
ITS authoring frameworks are useful to reduce the efforts needed to create tutors, but the resulting tutors are usually more limited than domainspecific ones. The sophistication of the pedagogical behaviors they can produce depends on the knowledge components available to model a task domain. In this paper, we present research focused on integrating sophisticated domainindependent pedagogical behaviors in an ITS framework.

From Cognitive to Pedagogical Knowledge Models in Problem-Solving ITS Frameworks
To reduce the prohibitive efforts associated to problem-solving ITS, a domain-independent framework can be developed. In this paper, we compare ASTUS to the MTT architecture with examples drawn from a scatter plot tutor. We show that both approaches are similar, but that an ASTUS tutor can exhibit a more sophisticated tutoring behavior thanks to its “pedagogical knowledge model”.
متن کاملA Domain and Platform Independent Architecture for Presentation of Affective Behaviors of Animated Pedagogical Agents
This article presents the architecture and the implementation of a module responsible for the presentation of verbal (speech) and corporal (animation) behaviors of animated pedagogical agents. This module is independent of domain and application, being able to be inserted in any learning environment apart of its application domain, and independent of platform, making possible that it can be exe...
متن کاملAchieving Affective Impact: Visual Emotive Communication in Lifelike Pedagogical Agents
Lifelike animated agents for knowledge-based learning environments can provide timely, customized advice to support learners’ problem-solving activities. By drawing on a rich repertoire of emotive behaviors to exhibit contextually appropriate facial expressions and emotive gestures, these agents could exploit the visual channel to more effectively communicate with learners. To address these iss...
متن کاملIntegrating Case-Based Reasoning and Meta-Learning for a Self-Improving Intelligent Tutoring System
A framework integrating case-based reasoning (CBR) and meta-learning is proposed in this paper as the underlying methodology enabling self-improving intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Pedagogical strategies are stored in cases, each dictating, given a specific situation, which tutoring action to make next. Reinforcement learning is used to improve various aspects of the CBR module – cases are...

The Engine for Management of Adaptive Pedagogy (EMAP) is the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring’s (GIFT) first implementation of a domain-independent pedagogical manager. It establishes a framework within GIFT that adheres to sound instructional system design, while also providing tools and methods to create highly personalized and adaptive learning experiences. In this paper, we pr...
